About

I am Shania Sekhon, a Mental Health Counselor with my Limited Permit practicing individual and couples therapy in NY state, both in-person and virtually. I am passionate about working with young and middle-age adults, typically working with clients who are experiencing anxiety, relationship and family difficulties, self-esteem issues, depression, and trauma.

My approach to therapy is rooted in my firm belief in the power of self-exploration through a collaborative approach. Within both individuals and couples, I aim to be warm, open-minded and inquisitive with my clients in order to establish an authentic connection where I can learn what has brought them to therapy and what they wish to happen next. Within couples therapy, I hope to create a safe space for each partner to be heard and understood, without the fear of being judged.

In therapy, I try to accommodate the unique needs of each client. I most often operate from an Emotionally-Focused and Client-Centered approach as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Solution-Focused frameworks. Perhaps most important to my approach is that I value a multicultural perspective, recognizing the significant need for diversity in the counseling space. As a first-generation Indian American therapist, I am especially aware of the ways in which cultural beliefs and values influence the ways we lead our lives. With this knowledge, I am passionate about providing culturally competent care and a safe space for all communities.

I also provide diagnostic evaluations and testing to provide clarity and guide treatment for clients who are searching for answers as a result of experiencing difficulty in various areas of their life. I engage in testing and assessments for disorders including, ADHD/ADD, ASD, personality disorders, anxiety and depression, as well as differential diagnoses.

My hope is that my clients feel a shift toward self-acceptance and growth over the course of our time together. I strive for my clients to develop insight on themselves during sessions and apply it to their life outside of therapy.

I earned my Ed.M. in Mental Health Counseling and M.A in Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University.
